As I am sure many already know, the school district’s facility referendum passed with 1463 votes in favor of the referendum and 1341 votes opposed at the April 2nd election. The process of bringing referendums to the voters is something that we take very seriously. This referendum was the result of a months-long facility study that identified our most pressing needs within the buildings and within our curriculum. Along with this, we conducted a community survey that provided us with valuable information about the general feelings of our community regarding various projects. At the core of our processes is the fundamental goal to bring only what we feel is truly needed in order to provide the support of our operations and to continue to provide quality facilities for our students, staff, and community. All of this information together ultimately led to the project brought to the district residents that we felt best represented what the public was most likely to support. The second phase of our work will now begin as our staff, architects, construction managers, and community partners work to finalize the plans over the coming months. We will be sure to provide everyone with updates on our progress as we move toward the first construction projects beginning in the late spring of 2025. We are truly looking forward to the day that these projects are completed and we will work hard to be sure the projects are a source of pride for our community. Thank you to all of our residents for your continued interest in our schools and dedication to making our schools the best they can be! . Barry Cain Superintendent

The high school’s 1975 Career and Technical Education classrooms do not reflect modern work settings or allow for high-quality, real-world experiences for students. The past two school years have been spent researching CTE programs and visiting other high schools to see the model of “student-led production” in which students are working together in a business model to provide a high-quality, hands-on experience for all students involved, no matter their post-high school plans. The proposed remodel and expansion creates a centralized, collaborative CTE area, preparing Ellsworth students for their future careers as well as promoting partnerships with many manufacturers and businesses that will provide our economy with a quality workforce. Remember to vote on Tuesday, April 2.

The middle school’s science classrooms limit the student collaboration and flexible learning opportunities needed to meet current curriculum standards. The referendum would fund the remodel of three science classrooms, providing more collaborative, project based learning opportunities for our students. Remember to vote on Tuesday, April 2. Here is what the facility referendum question will look like on the April 2nd ballot. A response of YES to the ballot question will approve the borrowing of funds for addressing maintenance, and improving the Career and Technical Education (CTE) space, and the Health and Physical Education space. A response of NO to the ballot question would reject borrowing funds for facility improvements.
I am hopeful that over the past several weeks you have had the opportunity to become informed about the upcoming facility referendum that is on the ballot next Tuesday, April 2nd. I appreciate the time that our parents and residents have taken to review the information, ask questions, and provide feedback. It is always our primary goal to get information to our residents through a number of avenues to truly inform residents about the projects and the rationale behind the projects. I often get the question of why we bring referendum questions to the public. The primary reason is that annual school district budgets are not meant to provide for large-scale facility maintenance or building projects. They simply have never been. School Districts are very unique in that we must ask for voter approval for these projects through the referendum process. This process was established to provide the voter the voice in these major financial decisions. With this process, residents truly make the decisions regarding the use of their tax dollars. The projects coming to all voters on April 2nd are the result of a nearly two-year process of an in-depth study of our facilities to identify our most immediate needs along with a community survey that narrowed the projects based on the feedback we received. They are also the result of a consistent focus on providing quality facilities for our community through ongoing maintenance and planning. Without this process, the projects simply build and become unmanageable. Bringing a referendum to the voters of the district is not something we ever take lightly. We understand very well the work we need to do to bring responsible projects to the voters and then communicate well why we have brought them to the voters for consideration. Once again, I thank you very much for taking the time to learn more about the proposed projects. I hope that we have provided you with quality information throughout this past number of weeks. Please remember to vote on April 2nd! Please visit our school district website at https://www.ellsworth.k12.wi.us/page/facility-referendum-2024 for much more information.
